SMU claims Royal Oaks title for second consecutive fall victory

Not since 2009 has a Mustang team put together back-to-back fall victories.

On the strength of a final-round 15-under 269 at Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas, SMU claimed the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate near its own backyard. The Mustangs maintained the top spot on the leaderboard and ended the day with an 11-shot victory on Baylor.

SMU really pulled away from the field in the second round. The top two teams were tied after an opening 2-under 282 on Monday morning, but in the afternoon, SMU outmatched Baylor, 274 to 280. SMU was 27 under for the tournament.

A Mustang team has never won this tournament before. This SMU team also goes down in the record books as the first since 2009 to win back-to-back tournaments in the fall season. The Mustangs won the Maridoe Intercollegiate before this week in Dallas. They were second at their own Trinity Forest Invitational last month.

Mac Meissner and Ollie Osborne both birdied the final hole of the tournament to move into a tie for the individual title, marking the first win of the year for both Mustangs.

The individual leaderboard was quite crowded, as Liberty’s Jonathan Yaun and Michigan’s Charlie Pilon also tied for individual medalist honors. All four men were 8 under for 54 holes.
