Simon Viitakangas wins Queensland Stroke Play by two shots thanks to third-round 64 at Southport Golf Club

GOLD COAST, Australia (Oct. 21, 2014) — Simon Viitakangas capitalized on a third-round 64 to capture a two-shot victory at the Queensland Men's Stroke Play. Despite shooting 72, 70, and 71 in rounds one, two, and four, Viitakangas shot seven-under par in the third round, which was lowest in the 72-hole tournament by two strokes. Viitakangas trailed first-round leader Troy Moses by five shots after a one-over 72 on Sunday. Moses, who eventually finished six back in a tie for fourth place, was coming off a big win at the Keperra Bowl a week earlier. Travis Smyth took second place at 279, shooting 66 in the final round to surge into the runner-up position. Tied for second place with Smyth was Cameron Davis, who also shot a stellar final round, a 67, to finish just two back of Viitakangas.
