Simmerman opens with 62, edges Harwell at San Antonio Am

Danny Simmerman stamped his name on the Greater San Antonio Championship after reaching 10-under for the week.

Danny Simmerman stamped his name on the Greater San Antonio Championship on Sunday after reaching 10-under par for the week at the Club at Comanche Trace in San Antonio.

After opening with a round of 10-under 62 – a bogey-free round that included an eagle at the par-4 sixth – it was truly Simmerman’s tournament to lose the rest of the way. He followed with rounds of 71-73 for a one-shot win over San Antonio native Colby Harwell.

Last fall, Simmerman, from Shavano Park, Texas, reached the Round of 32 at the U.S. Mid-Amateur. He was a quarterfinalist at the Crump Cup.

Harwell entered the San Antonio event off a missed cut at the Trans-Mississippi Amateur in Dallas. He won the Texas Mid-Amateur a year ago.

Another San Antonio native, Kane Ybarra, was third but considerably farther back. He finished the week at 2 under. Seth Johnson of New Braunfels, Texas, was the only other player to get under par for the tournament. He was solo fourth at 1 under.
