No. 18 seed Joe Shaktman of Coral Springs, Fla., won five consecutive matches to claim the Palm Beach County Senior Amateur Match Play Championship, completing his run with a 2 & 1 victory over No. 4 seed David Roschman of Palm Beach Gardens in the final.
Shaktman never needed extra holes during the championship, and none of his five matches reached the 18th.
He opened with a 3 & 2 win over Mike Chouinard of Hobe Sound before meeting No. 31 seed Jeff Egizio of North Palm Beach in the Round of 16. Egizio had already produced one of the tournament's biggest upsets by eliminating No. 2 seed Mike Nealy, but Shaktman stopped his run with a convincing 5 & 3 victory.
Shaktman then knocked out No. 7 Joe Ingarra of Palm Beach Gardens 2 & 1 in the quarterfinals before beating No. 6 Eduardo Soffici of Stuart in the semifinals.
The championship match was originally scheduled for Aug. 30, but bad weather forced it to be postponed until Friday, Sept. 4. When play resumed, Shaktman finished the job against Roschman, winning 2 & 1 to complete a five-match sweep.
Roschman's runner-up finish capped an impressive stretch of his own. He had already collected division titles at the 30th Amateur Stroke Play and DraftKings Shootout before reaching another championship match. His path to the final included a semifinal victory over No. 17 Diego Besga of Weston.
For Shaktman, five matches, five victories and no extra holes made his No. 18 seeding increasingly irrelevant with every round.
Will Davenport wins Palm Beach County Mid-Amateur Match Play title
Will Davenport of Boynton Beach, Fla., successfully defended his Palm Beach County Mid-Amateur Match Play Championship, completing a wire-to-wire run as the No. 1 seed with a 4 & 3 victory over No. 10 Jordan Elsen of Palm Beach Gardens in the final.
Davenport's title defense rarely looked in doubt. After play resumed, he closed out his suspended semifinal against No. 13 Scott Butler of North Palm Beach 5 & 4, then carried that form into the championship match against Elsen.
The final victory completed a remarkably consistent five-match run. Davenport defeated Bobby Fox 3 & 2 in the Round of 32, Matt Lashinger 3 & 2 in the Round of 16 and Ryan Haxel 3 & 2 in the quarterfinals. He followed with the 5 & 4 semifinal win over Butler before beating Elsen 4 & 3 to become the 41st Mid-Amateur champion.
Davenport never needed to reach the 17th hole in any match, with winning margins of 3 & 2, 3 & 2, 3 & 2, 5 & 4 and 4 & 3.
Elsen provided the strongest challenge from the bottom half of the bracket. The No. 10 seed defeated Greg Norman Jr. 5 & 4 in the semifinals to earn his place in the championship match. His run ended against Davenport, but reaching the final from the No. 10 position capped an impressive week.
Butler also emerged as one of the tournament's surprise semifinalists. After advancing by default in the opening round, the No. 13 seed put together convincing victories before Davenport ended his run one match short of the final.
The unpredictability began early, with No. 31 Jeff Wells of North Palm Beach eliminating No. 2 Greg Etimos of Palm Beach Gardens 2 up in the Round of 32.
Through all the upsets around him, Davenport remained the constant, turning the No. 1 seed into a second consecutive championship.
