Scottish Open Amateur: Marco Penge, 17, secures biggest win of career

LOSSIEMOUTH, Scotland — 17-year-old Marco Penge of England battled blustery third and final round conditions at Moray Golf Club on Sunday to capture perhaps his biggest win of his young career — the Scottish Open Amateur Championship. After opening with back-to-back 69s, Penge fired 67 and 73 in Sunday's brutal 36-hole battle to secure a one shot win over Graeme Robertson of Scotland. "It’s my first win at Men’s amateur level, so I’m progressing," Penge told the Scottish Golf Union. "Playing in the Walker Cup was my goal at the start of the season so hopefully I have given the selectors something to think about." Penge closed out the final round with an eagle at the 17th, allowing him the slim cushion to make bogey at 18 and still edge Robertson by a stroke. Roberston would have been the first Scottish winner since 2008, and used a 66 in the morning round to get into contention, but fell just one shot short. The top-ranked amateur in the field, Lucas Herbert of Australia, fired 65-74 on Sunday to tie for fourth, alongside Callum Mackay and Tom Sloman of England, Ewen Ferguson of Scotland, and Mathias Eggenberger of Switzerland. Third place went to Irishman Cormac Sharvin, whose play in 2015 has been spectacular despite not owning a major victory. His third place finish at Moray comes after a two runner-up efforts earlier in the year — one in England at the Lytham Trophy, and another in his homeland at the Irish Open Amateur.
