After surrendering three under-par rounds on Thursday, the world's #1 course stiffened on Friday. No player managed to shoot par in the second round and the low round was 2-over 72 by four players. The seedings were determined for the match play portion of the tournament which begins on Saturday, and the race for the top 16 came down to a playoff.
Scott Harvey followed up his 2-under opening round of 68 with a 72 on Friday to earn medalist honors with a 36-hole score of even-par 140. The 2014 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion will face Bill Williamson of Cincinnati in Saturday morning’s first round of match play.
Matthew Van Zandt, who matched Harvey with an opening round 68 on Thursday, shot a 76 on Friday but still earned the No. 3 seed at 4-over 144.
In all, three past U.S. Mid-Amateur champions -- Harvey, Hagestad and Nathan Smith -- made the top flight for match play and will have a chance at the overall title. There was a 6-for-5 playoff for the final match play spots in the championship flight after the six players shot 10-over 150. The odd man out was Kris Mikkelsen, the 2021 champion at the C.B. Macdonald Invitational, who had to settle for the top seed in the second flight. He was followed by Joe Deraney, who grabbed the No. 2 seed at 151 (79-72).
Michael Brown will be the top seed in the third flight after rounds of 79-76.
Chip Lutz, the 2014 Crump Cup champion and 2015 U.S. Senior Amateur winner, captured Senior Medalist honors with a 36-hole total of 145 and will face Dan Sullivan of Pasadena, CA in Saturday’s match. Also advancing into the senior match play were the defending champion and Walker Cup captain Mike McCoy and Bob Royak, the 2019 U.S. Senior Amateur champ.
