Schroeder wins Houston City Amateur by two shots

HOUSTON (Sept. 30, 2018) – Just days after an attempted run through the match-play bracket at the U.S. Mid-Amateur, Grant Schroeder has claimed a different amateur golf title, and one much closer to home. The 26-year-old Montgomery, Texas resident is the Houston City Amateur champion.

Schroeder took the No. 50 seed on the match-play bracket at Charlotte (N.C.) Country Club at last week’s Mid-Amateur. He defeated Marc Dull, runner-up in 2015 Mid-Amateur, and Clark Brown. Then he ran into Andres Schonbaum in the Round of 16 and lost, 2 and 1. That was on Wednesday, and the Houston Amateur started on Friday.

At Memorial Park Golf Course, however, Schroeder found his groove. He trailed by two after an opening 3-under 68, came back with even-par 71 in Round 2, then climbed to the top with a 4-under 67 in the final round. At 7 under, Schroeder finished two shots ahead of runner-up Justin Kaplan from Houston.

Saturday weather delays caused the event to be shortened from 72 to 54 holes.

Devaughn Robinson, a Houston resident who won this event a year ago in a playoff over Kaplan, was third at 4 under. John Hunter of the Woodlands was the only other player to finish three rounds under par. He was fourth at 2 under.
