San Antonio Match Play: J.J. Wall medals at 67, easily wins first match

Wall, a former All-American at Texas, fired 67 to lead all qualifiers, then defeated No. 32 seed Thomas Schluter, 7 and 6

SAN ANTONIO, TX (May 29,2015) -- If your name is J.J. and you were trying to qualify for the San Antonio Match Play (today through Sunday, May 31st), today was your day. With about 80 players going for 32 Championship Flight spots, the top two qualifiers are named J.J.

J.J. Wall, 35, played well on a day where the average score was over 80. He had six birdies on the day and a lone bogey on the par-4 14th to finish with a 67 on the par 72 Fair Oaks Ranch layout. The former Texas All-American from San Antonio previously won the 2011 and 2014 San Antonio Am (stroke play).

His namesake, J.J. Lindsey of Adkins, started the day with an eagle on the first, but bogeys on 2 and 5 brought him back to even. Birdies on the 6th, 8th and 10th holes put him at -3 to end the day two strokes off the lead, tied with Jared Cornish of San Antonio.

Scores of 78 or better made the cut for the Championship Flight, with first round matches played in the afternoon. Those matches will continue until a (very tired) champion is crowned on Sunday.

AFTERNOON UPDATE

Wall easily defeated No. 32 seed Thomas Schluter, 7 and 6. The "other" J.J. (Lindsey) won his first match as well, over No. 31 seed Dustin Weldon, 3 and 2.
