BRIDGEPORT, West Virginia (August 10, 2017) -- Sam O’Dell wrapped up an impressive week in West Virginia with a successful attempt at retaining his title as the West Virginia Mid-Amateur Champion.
After posting a 2-under-par 70 in his qualifying round at West Virginia’s famed Pete Dye Golf Club, O’Dell would play his way through a total of five matches on his way to the trophy winning the last by a total of 3 & 2 over Philip Reale.
In the championship match, O'Dell drew first blood, making a birdie on the par-4 second hole to take a lead that he would build on with birdies on Nos. 6 and 7.
Reale made a birdie on 15 to get within two with three to go, but O’Dell managed to hit a 70-foot birdie bomb on the 247-yard par-3 3rd hole, ending Reale’s hopes at a comeback.
This Mid-Amateur win is the second state title this year for Sam O’Dell, who took home his third West Virginia State Amateur Championship in June.
