SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (Feb. 23, 2014) -- There may be a few days left in the month of February but March Madness has already hit at the San Francisco City Championship.
On Day 2 of match play, which saw 32 players in the Championship Division do battle at Presidio Golf Course for a chance to reach next weekend's Round of 16, upsets ruled the day and seemingly changed the scope of the event, considered the oldest municipal championship in the nation.
The biggest upset, in terms of seeding, came when Shintaro Ban knocked off defending champion and No. 1 seed Will Brueckner, 1-up. The No. 32 seed Ban, a recent commit to UNLV, lives another round and will face No. 49 Henry Cassriel in next weekend's 'Sweet 16'.
Cassriel, of course, logged a second straight upset. He beat No. 16 Hayden Shieh on Saturday and dispatched of No. 17 Andrew Tilton Sunday.
No. 4 seed Ryan Knop avoided the upset by defeating No. 29 Lance Los, 3-and-2. He'll move on to face No. 20 Tanner Hughes, an upset winner over No. 13 Teddy Collins.
Walker Huddy, the 60th seed who survived a Saturday morning playoff just to get into match play, remains alive. He pulled off his second straight upset, defeating Zack Bailey 5-and-3 on Saturday after beating No. 5 Kory Storer in the Round of 64.
On the other side of the bracket, Jonathan de los Reyes stayed alive by defeating Owen Hutchison, 4-and-2, Sunday. The St. Mary's College golfer and recent amateurgolf.com Tour winner, beat Sean Barrett on Saturday while Hutchison knocked off No. 2 seed and stroke-play qualifying medalist Kris Server on Saturday.
Third seeded Justin Suh advanced, too. He beat Daniel Connolly, 3-and-1 to reach the Round of 16.
