Ray wins Kentucky Senior Amateur in three-way playoff

Scott Ray outlasted Gary Backlund and James Volpenhein in a two-hole playoff at Bellefonte Country Club.

Scott Ray outlasted Gary Backlund and James Volpenhein in a two-hole playoff on Tuesday at Bellefonte Country Club in Ashland, Ky., to win the Kentucky Senior Amateur. Ray had consistent rounds of 71-71 to reach 2 over and the three-way tie for the top spot.

For Ray, it’s a second Kentucky Senior title in the span of three years. Backlund’s history in this event in similarly impressive. He won the title back-to-back in 2014-15.

Behind the top three players, Buddy Bryant was solo fourth at 4 over. He gained ground with a closing 69, which was the lowest score of any player in the final round. It was one of only three sub-70 scores in the field.

Trey Wilburn finished solo fifth at 4 over after rounds of 72-72.

Dennis Long won the masters division by four shots with rounds of 75-71.

In the legends division, Elmo Greer fired rounds of 71-73 for a 4-over total that left him six shots ahead of Bill Damron and Mike Prince.
