Portuguese International Amateur: Goddard picks up big win

Harry Goddard became the first Englishman since Eddie Pepperell in 2011 to win

Harry Goddard became the first Englishman since Eddie Pepperell in 2011 to win the Portuguese International Men's Amateur Championship. Pedro Lencart, runner-up, was very close to being the third straight member of the Portuguese national team to win in successive years. Goddard, with a total of 269 (71-65-67-66), ended up prevailing by one shot over Lencart (68-69-65-68) and the Eduard Rousaud (68-68-66-68) of Spain, both with 270 (-18). The Portuguese-Spanish pair had started the last 18 holes tied at the front with a total of -14. Lencart shone with birdies on holes 15, 16 and 17, but a bogey on the par-3 18th prevented him from forcing a playoff with Goddard. "I can't believe it, I still can't digest it," said Goddard of the win. "I played well all week. I didn't make too many mistakes, I stayed true to the game plan." "I started well, but at the turn I felt a little nervous. But I pulled myself together and made birdies in four of the last five holes." In his fourth time playing in the event, the 20-year-old Goddard started the day tied with Dutchman Stan Kraai and Norwegian Herman Wibe Sekne, jumping to victory with the day's low round, a 6-under 66. Stan Kraai was 4th, with 271 (70-66-67-68), -14, and Englishman Joshua Bristow, with 274 (70-67-70-67), completed the top 5 of the tournament.
