Past champs still alive in San Francisco City senior semifinals

Randy Haag and Jim Knoll are gunning for a third title, but tough opponents await; the Supers and Women Seniors are also down to 4

After a weekend of matches, the San Francisco City Senior Championship is down to the final four, with two past champions still alive at TPC Harding Park.

The players have been treated to ideal course conditions as Harding Park prepares to host its first-ever major championship, the PGA Championship in May.

The defending champion Jim Knoll won two matches over the weekend to book his place in the semifinals, first beating Kevin Kobalter 1 up and then taking out Mark Martin 2 and 1. He will next face qualifying co-medalist Scott Anderson, who needed only 27 holes to win his two matches, including an 8 and 7 romp on Sunday.

Randy Haag, who like Knoll is a two-time winner in this event, beat Jeff Mertel 2 and 1 and then took down four-time champion Gary Vanier 5 and 3 to reach the semis. He will face Larry Salk, who like Anderson got his work done in only 27 holes.

Another two-time champ, Jim Williams, lost his first-round match 2 up to Thomas Beer. The other qualifying co-medalist, Joey Ferrari, won his first match but lost to Salk on Sunday.

SUPER SENIOR DIVISION

Herb Jensen won his two matches over the weekend, including a 4 and 3 win on Sunday over the qualifying medalist Robbie Thompson, to reach the semifinals of the Super Senior division. He will next face Neil Duffy, who won his quarterfinal match over David Hemrick by the same 4 and 3 score.

A third quarterfinal match ended on the 15th green, with David Bosley defeating the defending champion Frank Pieper 4 and 3. Bosley will face Dan Bieber, who won his two matches 5 and 4; and 2 and 1.

WOMEN'S SENIOR DIVISION

Stroke play medalist Erika Corradi reached the semifinals of the Women's Senior division, with a 5 and 4 win over Helen Lee on Sunday. She will face Kelly Simpson, who was a 3 and 2 winner over Elizabeth Hobson.

Diana McInnis and Soran Lim make up the other semifinal matchup, after defeating Pamela Palmieri and Kazumi Monaco, respectively.

Play continues next weekend at TPC Harding Park, with the champions crowned on Sunday.
