Ferrari, Anderson pace San Francisco City senior qualifying
Joey Ferrari of Stockton and Scott Anderson of Bakersfield were the co-medalists in San Francisco City Senior Championship qualifying on Tuesday, after each shot 1-under 71 at TPC Harding Park.
31 players advanced to the match play stage, joining the defending champion Jim Knoll who will assume the No. 2 seed.
For Ferrari and Anderson, it could have been even better. Anderson was 3 under but suffered bogeys at 16 and 18. Ferrari was 4 under but bogeyed 14 and doubled 18. Still, their only job was to advance to match play and they did that comfortably.
Others weren't so comfortable. Five players shot 79, which forced a playoff for the final two spots in the match play bracket. Michael Wishart of Hillsborough and Peter Susnow of San Carlos survived the playoff and took the final two spots. Susnow will play Ferrari in the lead-off match, while Wishart will take on Knoll.
Four players, including two-time senior champ Randy Haag of Orinda, shot even-par 72. Another two-time champ from Orinda, Jim Williams, shot 75 to comfortably advance.
The all-time senior titleist, four-time winner Gary Vanier of Pleasant Hill, overcame a slow start to shoot 78 and advance to match play.
Match play starts on Wednesday morning, while the Men's Super Senior and Women's Senior divisions tee off with stroke play qualifying.
