Past champ Hogarth among those advancing at the SCGA Match Play

Eight intriguing matchups await the field in the Round of 16 at La Costa

Tim Hogarth (Northridge, Calif.) defeated Jordan Fisher (Pasadena, Calif.) 4 and 3 to advance to the second round at the Southern California Match Play at the La Costa Resort. 32 players began the match play phase of the championship on the Champions Course, which once hosted the WGC Match Play (Tiger Woods won twice there). Hogarth, who won the SCGA Match Play in 2016, took control of his match early, going four up through seven holes and cruising from there. He will next face Cullen Brasfield of La Quinta. Among those advancing are Jamie Cheatham of Rancho Santa Fe, who won the last tournament he played at La Costa, last year's AmateurGolf.com La Costa Classic. Cheatham, the No. 1 seed in this event, took out Joshua Song of Diamond Bar 5 and 4. Others in the final 16 include last year's runner-up Cody Hall (Wildomar, Calif.), former SCGA Mid-Amateur champion Dan Sullivan (Pasadena, Calif.), Ventura City champion Blake Bourelle (Bakersfield, Calif.), former USC player Sam Kim (Irvine, Calif.) and AmateurGolf.com's own Kyle Rector (San Diego, Calif.). Two rounds will be played on Wednesday, paring the field down to the four semifinalists who will play Thursday for the title.
