Nottingham takes over top spot at Tennessee Amateur

COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. (Aug. 8, 2018) – With a birdie on No. 18 at Spring Creek Ranch, William Nottingham took the solo lead halfway through the Tennessee Amateur. Nottingham has had back-to-back rounds of 3-under 69 to start the week.

In those 36 holes, Nottingham, of Kingsport, Tenn., has had 11 birdies. Last year Nottingham, a Clemson junior, finished T-7 in this event. He won the Tennessee Junior Amateur in 205 and 2016, but is still chasing his first state amateur title. Most notably, Nottingham won the 2017 North & South Amateur.

Behind Nottingham, Brock Ochsenreiter of Nashville is in solo second at 5 under. The excitement in his day came at the par-5 18th, where Ochsenreiter made eagle.

First-round leader Lee Maxwell fell slightly off the pace on Wednesday, following an opening 68 with an even-par 72. There was an eagle on Maxwell’s card too. He made a 3 on the par-5 seventh after starting with two bogeys in his first five holes. After the eagle, Maxwell didn’t make anything but a par on his way in.

Maxwell is tied for third with Brayden Garrison at 4 under.

Six-time Tennessee Amateur champion Tim Jackson had a 2-under 70 on Wednesday to get to 2 under for the tournament and into a tie for sixth. Jackson is now only four off the lead.

Notable names down the leaderboard include Whit Turnbow, the former head golf coach at Middle Tennessee State who recently was announced as the next Tennessee Golf Foundation president. He had rounds of 75-70 to get to 1 over and a tie for 14th. Buzz Fly, a longtime Tennessee amateur standout, is one behind that in a tie for 19th.
