ONALASKA, WI (September 13, 2016) -- With a 36-hole tally of 2-under at La Crosse Country Club Nick Cocalis has won the Wisconsin Mid-Amateur. Cocalis finished one shot in front of defending champion Robert Gregorski and Joe Weber.
Starting the day at even-par and one-stroke behind, following a 72 on Monday, Cocalis moved into red figures with birdies on the 5th and 6th holes. His momentum was halted briefly with a bogey on the 9th hole but he was able to regain it with birdies on Nos. 11 and 13 that brought him to 3-under. A bogey on the way in dropped Cocalis to 2-under.
Gregorski started the day with a share of the lead at 1-under and thanks to a three birdie in eight hole start he was able to reach 4-under. However, a double-bogey on the 9th brought him back towards the field.
On the back nine Gregorski was never able to get anything going and he was still 2-under on the final hole. Knowing a birdie would win it Gregorski bogeyed the 18th to finish 1-under. Gregorski shot a final round even-par 72.
First round co-leader Joe Weber, playing on his home course, was 2-under as well coming to the final hole but facing the same scenario as Gregorski he to bogeyed the hole to come in at 1-under.
Weber had it to 3-under early in the round as he posted a four birdie, four bogey final round even-par 72.
A trio of players finished tied for fourth at 2-over. The group included Josh Dirks, Jim Walkley and Jason Pendleton.
