Montana State Amateur: Kade McDonough rides wild ending to victory

In an "only in Montana" ending, the winner's ball got lodged in a pine tree, but he survived with a double bogey and one shot win

2026 Montana Amateur champion Kade McDonough

Kade McDonough survived one of the wildest finishes imaginable to capture his first Montana State Amateur title, overcoming a heartbreaking break on the final hole before emerging victorious at the 109th Montana State Men's Amateur in Helena.

The Missoula native entered the 18th hole with a two-shot lead, but his tee shot lodged high in a pine tree and could not be identified before the three-minute search expired. Forced to return to the tee, McDonough made double bogey—his only dropped shots of an otherwise spectacular final-round 65 that featured seven birdies and no bogeys through the first 17 holes. His 9-under-par total of 201 left the door open for Max Milton, but the Polson High School standout came up just short when a five-foot par putt to force a playoff slid past the hole.
