Rob McLelland posted steady even-par rounds of 72-72 to capture the Denver City Senior Amateur Championship by one stroke Sunday at Overland Park Golf Course.
McLelland's two-over 144 total held off Shane Thomas, who made a late charge with a second-round 68 to finish alone in second at three-over 145. Thomas had opened with 77 but nearly erased the five-shot deficit with his Sunday rally.
Jim Siedlecki took third at four-over 146 after rounds of 71-75, while a three-way tie for fourth at six-over 148 featured Jamie Conrad (73-75), Doug Rex (73-75), and Scott Sullivan (73-75).
The 36-hole stroke play event at the municipal layout in Denver drew a competitive senior field, with McLelland's consistency proving the difference. After his opening 72, he matched it Sunday while Thomas made his run.
Thomas, who finished 15th in last year's edition at eight-over, bounced back from his opening-round struggles with the low round of the championship. But McLelland's steady play—no round higher than 72—left no margin for error.
Siedlecki's opening 71 was the low round of Saturday's first trip around Overland Park, though his 75 on Sunday dropped him two shots back of Thomas at the finish.
The tournament, open to amateurs age 50 and over with verifiable handicaps, featured a championship flight and multiple divisions based on handicap. David Nelson won last year's title at four-under 138.
McLelland's wire-to-wire performance netted him $864 in the gross division, with Thomas earning $720 for his runner-up finish and Siedlecki taking home $624 for third.
