Mahle mounts comeback to win Chattanooga Choo Choo

First-round leader and College of Charleston sophomore overcomes second-round lapse to win Chattanooga Choo Choo by one

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (July 29, 2014) — After firing 65 to hold the first-round lead by a shot, College of Charleston sophomore Mathew Mahle dropped to two shots behind Chattanooga native Nick Blakely at the conclusion of round two thanks to a three-over par 74. But Tuesday brought the Lexington, Ky. native back into the forefront, as his final-round 71 — capped off by an eagle on the final hole — edged Blakely by a stroke to win the Chattanooga Choo-Choo. Mahle entered the par-five 18th hole down by one to Blakely before his eagle matched with Blakely's par opened the door for Mahle to swoop in and capture victory. Defending champion Ben Wolcott, despite shooting 66 in Sunday's first round, shot consecutive 73's in rounds two and three. He finished two shots back in a tie for third place.
