Luna Sobron finishes as only amateur to make cut at Women's British Open

Luna Sobron of Spain had a spectacular weekend at Turnberry, shooting 71 and 69 on Saturday and Sunday to tie for 13th place

TURNBERRY, Scotland — As the only amateur to make the cut on Sunday at Turnberry, Luna Sobron of Spain was a shoe-in for low amateur honors at the Women's British Open. But she did more than that, posting rounds of 69 and 71 over the weekend to finish in a tie for 13th place. After opening with 70, Sobron struggled to a 77 on day two, but still made the cut by three shots. Then she turned it on, rising inside the top-15 by tournament's end and missing a top-10 finish by two strokes. “It has been a pleasure to play here with the best players in the world and a privilege to win a trophy people like Lydia [Ko] and Michelle [Wie] have won,” she said. “I’ve enjoyed it a lot. The second day was very difficult. I suffered a lot because I played in the afternoon but it has been great fun.” Sobron, who was invited to the 2015 event because of her win at the 2014 European Women's Amateur, finished 11 shots back of winner Inbee Park — whose victory gave her the career grand slam at women's majors.
