Lucky No. 7: Nelson adds to AGA resume with Alabama Senior

Robert Nelson has won seven Alabama Golf Association titles, and the Senior Championship is his latest.

Robert Nelson of Fairhope, Ala., claimed his second Alabama Senior Amateur with a final-round 73 at Riverchase Country Club in Birmingham, Ala.. He finished three shots ahead of 2005 champion Richard Jeffers of Mobile. Nelson finished the championship at 9-under 207. The victory is his seventh AGA title following the Junior (1978), Mid-Amateur (2009), Senior Four-Ball (2014, 2017), Four-Ball (2016) and Senior (2017, 2019).

Playing in the final group together, Jeffers birdied his first four holes to quickly find himself within one shot of the lead. However, bogeys on three of the next four holes dropped him back and he eventually finished with a round of 71 (210).

Two-time champion Emile Vaughan (2007, 2013) finished in third at 2-under 214.

In the super senior championship, Stewart Alexander of Auburn posted a final-round 73 to win the inaugural championship and his first AGA title. Alexander finished at 6-under 210 for a three-shot victory over Robert Parmar of Fairhope and Ron Aldy of Tuscaloosa. Alexander won the 1986 U.S. Amateur played at Shoal Creek. He was the longtime men's golf coach at the University of Florida.
