Long Beach Open: Matthew Schafer takes low amateur honors

Schafer finished T8 overall at 14-under par and was the only amateur to finish in the top ten.

Matthew Schafer shot 68-71-67-68 to finish T8 at 14-under to finish as the low amateur in the field at the El Dorado Park Golf Club in Long Beach, Calif.

Schafer started 4-under through his first holes in the first round and made 19 birdies, one eagle, and seven bogeys for his tournament.

Other amateurs in the field were Sebastian Vallejo, who finished T18 at 12-under, Torey Edwards, who finished T27 at 10-under, and Patrick Pockels and Brennon Fahrny, who both finished T46 at 6-under.

Charles Porter was the overall winner, shooting a blistering 28-under and winning by an impressive nine shots. Of the golfers that made the cut, only three golfers finished their tournament over par.

Joe Fryer and Brad Reeves finished T2 at 19-under.
