LONG BEACH, CA (June 19, 2016) -- In order for a player to win the Long Beach Match Play championship he must survive a field of 64, two weekends of play and six matches, including a 36-hole final. The player to survive the grueling test this year was UC Irvine senior Bryan Shin who completed his run to the title with a 37th hole victory against UC Riverside sophomore Matt Lutz on Sunday.
Tournament play at El Dorado Park Golf Club began on Saturday, June 11th with Round of 64 play. The tournament continued with the Rounds of 32 and 16 on Sunday, June 12th before restarting on Saturday, June 18th with the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds.
Shin, the four-seed, reached the finals by defeating 26-seed Michael Lascario 4&3.
The seven-seed, Lutz, advanced to the finals thanks to a 4&3 win over three-seed Jonathan Young.
