Local Guo rallies for Orlando International Women's Am title

Sophie Guo put together a strong finish in her hometown to add another amateur golf title to her resume

ORLANDO, Fla. (Jan. 5, 2018) – Sophie Guo rallied in the final round of the Orlando International Women’s Amateur with a final-round 69 that was just enough to climb two spots on the leaderboard and take the title. Guo clipped first-round leader Ashley Lau Jen Wen by a single shot.

The title represents one more feather in the cap of Guo, a decorated junior who resides in Orlando but is originally from China. She won the Doral Publix Junior a year ago, scored a top-10 finish in the Florida Women’s Amateur and was fourth at the AJGA Girls Championship. Guo has committed to play college golf for Texas beginning next fall.

Guo’s third-round 69 at Orange County National’s Panther Lake course was made up of 15 pars and just three birdies, one of which came at No. 16 and effectively sealed the title for her. Lau Jen Wen, a freshman at Michigan, had a final-round 72 that included a single bogey on the back nine.

Kentucky’s Leonie Bettel was third with a 1 under total. Behind that, Louisville senior – and second-round leader – Lauren Hartlage was fourth at 1 over. Hannah Berman, who plays for Jacksonville University, rounded out the top 5 at 2 over.
