Led by Medalist Peter Kuest BYU wins the WCC

PROVO, UT (April 22, 2017) - BYU won the team title at the West Coast Conference Championship rather easily, but it was a fight until the very end for medalist winner Peter Kuest. Tied to begin the final round at Riverside Country Club with Hayden Shieh of Santa Clara, the Cougar freshman finally was able to eek out the title on the first hole of a sudden death play. After both players finished regulation at 11-under Kuest won the playoff with a par. Starting on the back nine, Kuest started slowly with a 12th hole double-bogey and then with a birdie sandwiched in between a bogey on the 13th. However, the dropped shot on his fifth hole of the day would be his last of the round as he went on to birdie the 15th and 16th holes before rallying in a big way on his second nine with four more birdies. The birds on Nos. 1, 2, 5 and 6 were all part of a 4-under 32 side and a 4-under 68 overall tally. Shieh shot a 4-under 68 as well, with five birdies and a bogey. BYU won the team title with a 24-under showing that put them seven shots in front of second place, No. 24 Pepperdine at 17-under. 12-under St. Mary's was third while Pacific and Santa Clara share fourth at 2-under. Helping BYU to the second best team total in tournament history were top-20 performers Patrick Fishburn (T5; -6), C.J. Lee (T11; -2), Rhett Rasmussen (T15; -1) and Spencer Dunaway (T20; +1). The top-five of the individual standings were rounded out by Tim Widing (San Francisco) in third at 8-under, Riley Elmes (Loyola Marymount) was fourth at 6-under while Fishburn; Angus Montgomery (Gonzaga) in a tie for fifth at 5-under.
