L.A. County: Cantlay wins battle of Past Champs

2016 winner Nick Cantlay edges the defending champ Jonathan Saunders by a single shot at Lakewood G&CC

LAKEWOOD, Calif. (August 26, 2018) - Nick Cantlay (Los Alamitos, Calif.) won a duel of past Los Angeles County Amateur champions, edging the defending champion Jonathan Saunders (Long Beach, Calif.) by a single shot at Lakewood Golf & Country Club.

Cantlay, who recently completed his college career at Long Beach State University, also won the title in 2016, shooting 136 for a three-shot win.

The two past champs took the first-round lead after matching 68s, with Eric Allison (Anaheim, Calif.) one shot back. Playing together in the final round, Cantlay shot a 69 to Saunders' 70, with Allison (72) tied for third with John Perry (Brentwood, Calif.), four shots back.

Ryder Epson (Long Beach, Calif.) finishe dsolo fifth at 142, five shots off the winning score.

Doug Hutchinson (Costa Mesa, Calif.) won the Net Division by three shots over Saunders with a 135 net total.
