Jason Korody of Howell, Mich., turned a career-best opening round into his first Golf Association of Michigan tournament victory, winning the 25th Michigan Net Amateur Championship at Arbor Hills Golf Club.
Korody opened with an actual score of even-par 72, the first par-or-better round of his career, which translated to a net 65. He followed with a 77 for a net 70 in the final round to finish at 9-under 135, three shots clear of the field.
The 50-year-old credited an exceptional opening day that featured five birdies, several key up-and-downs and three made putts from beyond 30 feet.
Korody faced his biggest test after a double bogey at the par-4 eighth during the final round. He steadied himself after the turn, with a birdie at No. 11 helping him regain momentum on the way to the title.
Aston Yuhasz of Fremont, a 19-year-old making his GAM tournament debut, finished runner-up at 138 after a final-round net 72.
Aaron Schuer of Brighton took third, while Gary Yee, Michael Cannata and Malcolm Perry shared the next position at 140.
For Korody, who has recently returned to more regular competitive golf after years away from the game, the victory provided two milestones in as many days: his first even-par round and first GAM championship title.
