Kings River Golf & Country Club wins NCGA Team Match Play title

After two runner-up finishes, Kings River breaks through with its first title at Poppy Hills

Kings River Golf & Country Club didn’t want to touch the Northern California Golf Association Team Match trophy before play started for fear of jinxing themselves. It may have been a great decision.

Kings River, located in Kingsburg, Calif., won its first overall NCGA Team Match Championship title on a stormy Sunday at Poppy Hills Golf Club in Pebble Beach, Calif., defeating runner-up Santa Rosa (Calif.) Golf & Country Club, 21-15 in the finals. Kings River had previously won the Saturday League title in 2011 and 2014, but lost in those overall finals.

“It’s just been a super cool season,” said Kings River captain Travis Schletewitz. “We didn’t expect to be here. It’s fun to bring your Scratch League team to Team play and be competitive.”

In singles play, Kings River won by a score of 13-11, getting victories from Steve Trevino (4 and 3), Anton Bortolussi (1-up), Trent Soares (6 and 5), Russell Katayama (2-up), Alex Marriott (7 and 6) and RC Rouch (2 and 1).

In the four-ball matches, Kings River won 8-4 behind wins by Trevino and Bortolussi (6 and 5), Katayama and Marriott (5 and 3) and Rouch and Brian Strack (1-up).
