WILLIAMSPORT, Penn. (May 16, 2017) -- How do you overcome a 4-shot deficit in a 36 hole tournament and pass 6 teams ahead of you? It's easy, if you're Ken Phillips and Oscar Mestre and playing in the Pennsylvania Senior Four-Ball.
Just go out and improve your first round score (a 2-under 69) by a full 6 shots, putting up the low round of the day, and the tournament for that matter.
Phillips, who plays out of Lancaster Country Club, and Mestre (Overbrook Golf Club) used a blistering round of 8-under, 63 to post 10-under, 132 and to finish one shot ahead of runner-up teams of Bob Crnjarich and John Rodney (Diamond Run), and Bob Beck (Lehigh CC) and Chip Lutz of LedgeRock Golf Club.
Lutz, the 2015 U.S. Senior Am champ and only amateur to make the cut at the 2016 U.S. Senior Open. He had to return home quickly to compete in this event, having just completed the 54-hole National Invitational at Whisper Rock, where he and partner Dave Nelson of Nevada lost the senior title in a playoff.
The event was hosted by Williamsport Country Club, a par 71, A.W. Tillinghast design.
