Johnson wins Horton Smith title with help from final-round 66

Ryan Johnson had the distinction over the weekend of winning an amateur tournament played at a PGA Tour venue

For the first time this year, the Horton Smith Invitational has the distinction of being an amateur event that shares a venue with a PGA Tour event. The Rocket Mortgage Classic will be played at Detroit Golf Club in June.

After four days at the event honoring Horton Smith, the long-running professional at Detroit Golf Club and the man who won the inaugural Masters Tournament in 1934, Ryan Johnson came out ahead. Johnson had rounds of 73-70-72-66 after alternating between the North and South courses this week.

Johnson’s final-round 66 on the south course tied the lowest score of the final round. It also was the final-round boost he needed to leapfrog runner-up Michael Busse, who had a share of the 54-hole lead with Will Anderson. Johnson was three shots back starting the final day.

Nick Gunthorpe finished third, a shot behind Busse, after getting a big boost from a final-round 67. Ben Smith was solo fourth another shot behind that.
