Inaugural Williams Cup: UNC, Georgia's Phillips victorious

Host Tar Heels run away with team event and Trent Philips shoots 15-under to win individual honors and earn Korn Ferry exemption

The North Carolina Tar Heels won their home event by nine shots with a score of 17-under par at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington.

David Ford, Austin Greaser, and Peter Fountain led UNC with top-5 finishes. The depth of the fifth-ranked Tar Heels shined through; they had five players in the field’s top 11. They wrap up their fall season with three victories and one fourth-place finish.

Georgia and Vanderbilt rounded out the top 3 in the team event as the only other schools to finish under par at eight-under and one-under, respectively. Trent Phillips shot rounds of 64-69-68 for a comfortable six shot victory. UNC's David Ford finished in second at 9-under par. NC State’s Maximilian Steinlechner can credit a second round 63, which included nine birdies and an eagle, for his third-place finish.

Philips made just five bogeys during the tournament; his first round 64 set the tone, as it was one of only two opening rounds in the 60s and four shots better than Austin Greaser's 68. The victory was made sweeter for Phillips because he earned an exemption in the Korn Ferry Tour's Rex Hospital Open next June.

UNC created the Williams Cup to honor and celebrate Roy and Wanda Williams. Roy Williams is not just known around campus for his basketball acumen but for his community building. He mentors coaches and spends time with Tar Heel athletes across all sports. In addition, Roy and Wanda Williams have donated $5.8 million to North Carolina during the 18 years he coached in Chapel Hill.

Fourth-place finisher Austin Greaser said, “As As a Tar Heel, having Coach William’s name on our home event is so cool. He bleeds Carolina blue and is one of the best coaches in college basketball history, and he means a ton to the Carolina family. He’s a greater guy than a coach, and fortunately, I’ve had quite a bit of time to chat and get to know him. He gives some great advice also.”
