Huseman leads after first round of Iowa Amateur

Andrew Huseman had seven birdies in his opening 4-under 67 at the Tournament Club of Iowa

POLK CITY, Iowa (July 23, 2018) – Andrew Huseman of Ankeny, Iowa, leads the charge after the opening round of the 116th Iowa Amateur.

Huseman, who posted 4-under 67 at the Tournament Club of Iowa thanks to seven birdies, leads another Andrew. Andrew O’Brien of Clive put up a 2-under 69 of his own, as did Tate Arends, of Orange City.

Huseman finished four years at Arkansas State last spring and will return this fall as a graduate assistant. Last month, he was in position to win the Fort Dodge Amateur until a rules breach born of a misunderstanding – Huseman and the other competitors in his group inadvertently played lift, clean and place in the third round – caused a disqualification. Huseman called the penalty on himself when he became aware of the misunderstanding.

Three more players finished under par, including Scott Hart of West Des Moines, Ryoto Furuya of Iowa City and defending champion Trevor Ullestad, a Jewell native who recently completed four years at the University of Missouri.

Six more players are tied for seventh at even par.

Two regulars in this championship are missing this year, having spent the day in Scotland attempting to qualify for the Senior Open Championship. Both Gene Elliott and Mike McCoy made it through the one-day 36-hole qualifier and will tee it up in the championship, to be played at the Old Course at St. Andrews, later this week.
