Hopkins, Stanek unseat defending champs at SC Senior 4-Ball

Danny Hopkins and Alex Stanek handled inclement weather the best to get a team win in Florence, S.C.

Wind, rain and cool temperatures greeted South Carolina Senior Four-Ball competitors in Florence, S.C., this week, but Danny Hopkins and Alex Stanek handled that best. The twosome had the low score of the final round, a 5-under 66 at Florence Country Club, which set up a three-shot win.

Hopkins, of Murrells Inlet, and Stanek, of Conway, started the final day with a one-shot lead over the title-defending team of Mike Gravley, of Greer, and Todd Webber, of Moore, and a two-shot lead over several more highly decorated teams.

Unfortunately for the field, the Horry County duo kept their feet on the gas and didn’t look back. After starting their round with a bogey on the first hole, Hopkins and Stanek stayed steady on the front nine with pars, adding a birdie on the par-5 eighth hole to help even their front nine.

As weather began to worsen on the back nine, Hopkins and Stanek seemed to embrace the elements as they added five birdies and four pars to ultimately win the championship by three shots over Bert Atkinson, of Charleston, and Sammy Truett, of Surfside Beach, who finished with a final-round 67. Gravley and Webber dropped to third.
