Hewson wins Euro Ladies Am, earns Women's British Open start

Roughly four months ago, Alice Hewson was impressing the world at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur with her powerful game. Hewson, an Englishwoman, has since finished her eligibility playing college golf for Clemson and made a series of starts across Europe. On Saturday, she earned one of the biggest titles of her career at the European Ladies Amateur.

Playing at Parkstone Golf Club in Poole, England, Hewson was seven shots off the pace and in a tie for 20th ending the final round. She made six birdies and two eagles to card a 6-under 66, the lowest score of the final round, and took the early clubhouse lead at 7-under-par.

When Finland’s Krista Junkkari also came in at that number, she and Hewson had to return to the course for extra holes. It took five more, but Hewson finally prevailed.

"It feels incredible, going into today I just went out there and tried to go as low as I could, I was brave out there and it really paid off,” Hewson told the European Golf Association. "I made a lot of birdies out there, I tried to be really brave, gave my putts a little bit extra, and took slightly braver lines."

The victory earns Hewson a spot in next week's AIG Women's British Open at Woburn.

"It's going to be incredible, it's going to be my first ever major, so close to home, and winning here at home too, it's really special."

Caterina Don, an incoming freshman on the Georgia women’s golf team, closed with a 2-under 70 and finished the at 6-under 282, one shot shy of the playoff. She finished third.
