Hawaii State Amateur: Brent Grant wins the Manoa Cup

Brent Grant was impressive all day long and by days end he was the 108th Manoa Cup champion

HONOLULU, HI (June 18, 2016) -- BYU-Hawaii's Brent Grant was impressive all day long and by days end he was the 108th Manoa Cup champion. Grant, the four-seed, defeated Justin Ngan, the three-seed, 5&4 at Oahu Country Club to complete his weeklong run to the title. Grant got off to a quick start winning two of the first three holes before Ngan won holes 6 and 7 to even the match. The match remained all-square for just one more hole and after Grant won the 9th he never looked back. By the time the players had cleared the 15th the lead had been pushed to 4 up. On the 19th hole Grant extended his advantage to 5 up, only to see Ngan rally winning the next three holes to get within 2 down. The match was still in question a couple of holes later but Grant, who qualified for the 2015 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball, won the 25th and 26th holes to restore his lead to 4 up. From there Grant was able to cruise to the title, finishing the match on the 32nd hole. Grant reached the finals with a 5&3 semifinal win over 17-seed Justin Taparra who had previously defeated the defending champion and top-seed Tyler Ota 1 up in the Round of 16. Ngan punched his ticket into the championship match thanks to a 2&1 win in the semis against 26-seed Shawn Lu.
