Hanzel wins his third SOS Jack Hesler title

Nine years after entering senior amateur golf, Doug Hanzel (Savannah, Ga.) continues to win tournaments. At The Resort at Glade Springs in West Virginia on Wednesday, Hanzel completed a five-shot win in the Society of Seniors (SOS) Jack Hesler Tournament, his fourth major senior win of the year. Hanzel had a strong spring, with titles at the Jones Cup Senior, the Gasparilla Senior, and the Timuquana Senior. The four-time AmateurGolf.com Senior Player of the Year (2013, 2016, 2017, 2019) is making a run at a fifth honor as he nears the top of the standings again in 2021. At the Hesler, Hanzel was the only player in the field to record three under-par rounds, finishing at 10-under 206. He opened with a two-under 70, took the lead with a second-round 68, then added another 68 in the final round to pull away. He finished five shots ahead of a strong trio of senior champions, with Steve Hudson (Birmingham, Ala.), Allen Peake (Macon, Ga.) and Keith Decker (Martinsville, Va.) all finishing tied at 5 under par. Michael Kelley (Westerville, Ohio) was the only other player in red figures, finishing solo fifth at 2 under. Rusty Strawn McDonough, Ga.), currently No. 2 in the Player-of-the-Year points race, and 2019 Hesler champ Ken Kinkopf (Jupiter, Fla.) tied for 7th at 1 over par. In the Super Senior division, Marc Fried (Solon, Ohio) defeated Steve Rogers (Bowling Green, Ky.) on the first playoff hole after both players finished 54 holes at 5-over 221. Four players tied for third, two shots back: Dan Parkinson (Lehi, Utah), Evan Long (Charlotte, N.C.), John Rodney (Kettering, Ohio) and Ben Hargis (Boyce, La.). George Washburn (Frederick, Md.) took the Legends division by two shots over Charley Yandell (Cashiers, N.C.) with a 1-over 217 total. Jim DuBois (Coral Springs, Fla.) won the Grand Master division by five shots over Steve Wilson (Solano Beach, Calif.) with a 6-over 222 total.
