Hanna-Wehrman Cup goes down to the wire as NCGA takes it

The NCGA took back the Hanna-Wehrman Cup in a thriller on Friday at Poppy Hills

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (Oct. 19, 2018) – A year after its first loss in 10 years, the NCGA took back the Hanna-Wehrman Cup in a thriller.

Having entered the singles matches at Popphy Hills holding a tight 6-4 lead, the NCPGA kept things tight but it wasn’t quite enough. Ben Peters, the 2018 NCGA Public Links champion, came through in the clutch, halving his late match with Brian Glosser to give the amateurs a 10.5-9.5 victory.

“It was a hard-fought win,” said NCGA captain Gail Rogers, the first female captain the NCGA has ever had. “It was exciting, coming down to the final match.”

The NCGA led 8-6 following wins by defending Player of the Year Jason Anthony and 2018 California Amateur champ Bobby Bucey, but the NCPGA came back with wins by Stuart Smith and Zach Makilan. Nick Moore and Matt Cohn, who won this year’s NCGA Amateur Stroke Play Championship and NCGA Mid-Amateur Championship, respectively, also had big wins for the NCGA.

The NCGA leads in the overall series, 24-18-10. The NCGA has won 11 of the last 12 years.
