Gonzaga's David Ganz shares second at Washington Open

Zags senior David Ganz made a strong bid at becoming the second consecutive amateur to win the Washington Open

KENT, WA (May 23, 2018) - On Wednesday Gonzaga senior David Ganz nearly became the second straight amateur to win the Washington Open. Ganz, who led the Zags in scoring during his senior season, finished 2-under in a three-way tie for second just one shot behind winner Ryan Benzel at Meridian Valley Country Club.

Ganz started his week with consecutive rounds of 1-under 71 to put himself in a position to win the golf tournament but trouble in the middle of his round seriously dented his chances. But he would make a furious comeback.

A former USA Gymnastics National Development Team member from 2006-2008, Ganz started his final round with seven straight pars before dropping shots at his 8th and 9th holes (17-18 as he started on the back nine) to fall to even par for the tournament.

A double-bogey on his 11th hole (the 2nd) dropped him to two over and seemingly out of it, but he rebounded immediately with birdies on the next two holes, and when he birdied the final two holes as well he was back to two under.

In the end Ganz, a top-10 finisher twice this season for Gonzaga, would sign for a closing round even-par 72, just one shot behind the winner.
