Goldenstein tops past champs to win Metropolitan Women's Am

Goldenstein held off seven-time USGA champion Ellen Port to win the Metropolitan Women’s Amateur.

Nearly a year after claiming the Missouri Women’s Amateur title, Emily Goldenstein earned another Show Me State victory. Goldenstein held off seven-time USGA champion Ellen Port to win the Metropolitan Women’s Amateur at Gateway National Golf Links in Madison, Ill.

Goldenstein, who played collegiately for Memphis, finished 36 holes at 2 under. She had an even-par 71 in the opening round then followed it with a 2-under 69 in the final round.

Goldenstein, who plays out of Persimmon Woods Golf Club, led from the start, and was the only player in the field to log a round under par throughout the tournament.

Two previous champions of the event finished right behind Goldenstein. Port, who was 3 over for the event, was one of them. McKenna Montgomery, who plays out of the same club as Goldenstein, is also in that group. All three played together on Tuesday, a day plagued by rain and thunderstorms.

Emily Marrs and Kayla Eckelkamp tied for fourth at 8 over.
