Philadelphia, circa 1910George Crump was born in Philadelphia in 1871 into a family of consequence. His grandfather had edited the Philadelphia Inquirer; his father served 24 years as the city's British vice-consul. The family owned the famed Colonnade Hotel in Philadelphia and built others down the Jersey Shore in Cape May and Sea Girt. The hotel business gave Crump the two things every golf dreamer needs: money and time.
