SANTA BARBARA, CA (August 21, 2017) - After three rounds and two days of golf, the semifinal matches at the 10th SCGA Senior Match Play Championship are set, and four established senior amateur are two rounds away from earning the title here at Sandpiper GC.
In the first semifinal match of the day Tuesday, former California Senior Amateur Champion John Pate will square off against John Hoffman of San Diego at 7:30 a.m. Pate has cruised through the first three rounds of competition, winning his first match Sunday 4 and 3 before dominating a 6 and 4 win Monday morning. In the Round of 16 match, Pate recorded six birdies and an eagle in his 14 holes of play, before beating Steve Schiro 3 and 2 in the quarterfinals.
Hoffman's route to the semifinals includes an opening-round 3 and 2 win over Rick Doebler, a tough 1 up victory over former SCGA Senior Player of the Year Michael Turner and a 3 and 2 quarterfinal defeat of Jeffrey Thomas of Costa Mesa.
On the other side of the bracket, Jim Ream will face current SCGA Senior Amateur Champion Craig Davis at 7:40 a.m. Ream put together a highlight real in his Monday morning Round of 16 match, carding an albatross on the 491-yard No. 5 hole en route to a 6 and 5 bashing of defending champion Craig Calkins. Ream ended the match with a hole out eagle on the 13th hole, playing today at 516 yards.
Davis began his day with a 2 and 1 win over four-time SCGA Amateur Champion Craig Steinberg, before besting Michael Rowley of San Luis Obispo 2 and 1 in what was a rematch of June's SCGA Senior Amateur, in which Davis defeated Rowley by 1 stroke.
The 18-hole final match will immedietely follow the semifinals.
