Fight On! Katherine Muzi wins SCGA Women’s Match Play title

In a battle of USC teammates, Muzi uses late run to take down Brianna Navarrosa

In a battle USC Trojans teammates, it was Katherine Muzi who fought her way to the SCGA Women’s Match Play Championship at Mission Viejo CC with a 3 and 2 win over Brianna Navarrosa.

The championship match was a see-saw battle from start to finish. Navarrosa jumped out to an early lead by taking the first hole, before Muzi battled back with wins on No. 2 and 3. Navarrosa had a 1 up lead heading into the final nine holes and when she rolled in a birdie on the uphill par-4 10th, the sophomore from San Diego enjoyed a 2-up lead over her Trojan teammate.

Muzi fought back with a birdie of her own on No. 11 to cut Navarrosa's lead in half. Re-energized, the rising senior from Newport Beach then went on a tear, winning holes 13-15 to take a 2 up lead. She closed out the match on the downhill par-3 16th when she drained an 8-foot birdie putt for a 3 and 2 victory.

Muzi saw action in five tournaments for the Trojans last season, earning a season-best third place finish at The Gold Rush in February. A three-time Rolex Junior All-American (2017-19), Navarrosa was one of the nation's top recruits coming out of Mater Dei Catholic High School in San Diego. The 2019 Canadian Women's Amateur Championship cracked a talented Trojan lineup seven times during the course of the season, including starts at the Pac-12 Championships, NCAA Regional and NCAA Championships.
