Alexander Elia held his nerve through a demanding final round before defeating Phillip Kench in a playoff to capture the San Diego City Amateur on Wednesday at Torrey Pines Golf Course.
The Coronado native and Vanguard University sophomore carded rounds of 69-66-73 for a 54-hole total of 8-under 208, matching San Diego State junior Phillip Kench, who closed with rounds of 71-67-70. The pair finished tied atop the leaderboard before Elia prevailed in extra holes on the famed South Course, which previously hosted the 2008 and 2021 U.S. Opens.
