Defending champ Ullestad finds his way to Iowa Am lead

Trevor Ullestad is tied with Tripp Kenney for the Iowa Amateur lead with one round to play

POLK CITY, Iowa (July 24, 2018) – After 36 holes at the Tournament Club of Iowa, Trevor Ullestad has found his way to the top of the leaderboard. The recent University of Missouri graduate is going for a title defense at the 116th Iowa Amateur.

Ullestad, who hails from Jewell, Iowa, posted a second-round 2-under 69 to get to 3 under for the tournament. He would have had the outright lead but for a bogey on the last hole. Instead Ullestad shares the top spot with Tripp Kenney of Des Moines, who went bogey-free for a 4-under 67 on Tuesday.

A year ago, Ullestad bested Broc Everett at this tournament after charging through the final round with a 3-under 69. Everett went on to win the individual title at this year’s NCAA Championship and has since turned professional.

First-round leader Andrew Husemen, of Ankeny, fell from 67 to 74 in the second round. He is tied for third with Matthew Walker, who got to 1 under with rounds of 71-70.

Ryoto Furuya of Iowa City and Jon Brown are both at even par to round out the top 5. One round remains before a champion is named.
