SAN DIEGO, CA (March 13, 2017) -- After the 36-hole first day at San Diego Country Club No. 17 Texas is in a prime position to defend their title at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic.
The day started with a brief fog delay before the weather broke and turned into a perfect day for golf. With one round remaining the Longhorns are 6-under and ahead of second place New Mexico, 2-under, by four shots while Ole Miss and Colorado State are tied for third at 1-under. Fifth place is currently being held by even-par St. Mary's.
Texas took over the lead thanks to three players turning in top-15 showings on Monday. Gavin Hall and Scottie Scheffler both posted 3-under days to share sixth place. Teammate Doug Ghim is just two shots further back in a tie for 14th at 1-under.
Out in front of the medalist race is Thomas Rosenmueller of North Texas. Looking for his second career title Rosenmueller is 5-under and the leader by one shot over four others. Rosenmueller tallied rounds of 69-70 on Monday as he carded 11 birdies and six bogeys.
The second place group at 4-under includes Cole Madey (UCLA), Ben Wolcott (Ole Miss), Blake Abercrombie (San Diego State) and Kerry Sweeney (Ole Miss).
