Day One at the Prestige: Vanderbilt and Oregon on top

With teams rewriting their school's record books this spring with unprecedented scoring, there's nothing like The Prestige at the challenging Greg Norman Course at PGA West to dish out a stern reminder of how hard the game of golf can be.

With its tight fairways, nine ponds and 102 bunkers, the Norman Course can be a beast under normal conditions. Throw in some high winds and the target-style layout located in the scenic Coachella Valley can be downright torturous.

Such was the case today during the first round of The Prestige, where none of the 15 teams in the field managed to break par. Vanderbilt and Oregon are tied for the first-round lead at 3-over 287, which LSU (288), Long Beach State (289) and Kansas (291) round out the top-five.

The Norman Course, playing at 7,100 yards for this event, really handed it to three of the top-10 teams in the nation on Monday, as No. 6 Texas Tech (+15; 299), No. 8 Stanford (+18; 302) and No. 2 Pepperdine (+21; 305) all struggled.

Only eight players managed to break par in the first round. Davis Bryant of Colorado State and Reid Davenport of Vanderbilt lead the field after crafting 2-under rounds of 69 in trying conditions. A total of six golfers are just one off the pace at 1-under par.

North Carolina and Arizona shared the team title last year at 4-under 848, while Pepperdine was the only other team to break par over 54-holes, finishing third at 3-under 849.
