MEADOW VISTA, Calif. (June 29, 2016) -- Corey Pereira successfully defended his title Wednesday with a final-round 70 to close out the 2nd annual Sierra Players Invitational.
Pereira, a senior at University of Washington, finished at 13-under after rounds of 68, 65, and 70. His 54-hole total was two shots better than his mark last year and six shots clear of runner-up Alex Lee. Lee, a Fresno state sophomore, shot a final-round 70 to continue his steak of runner-up finishes in this event.
The round of the day was a 67 shot by San Diego State junior Black Abercrombie. Abercrombie began the tournament with a 77 but battled back with rounds of 69 and 67 to finish in a tie for 4th place at 3-under par. He tied with UC Davis's Brandon Baumgarten and U of A's Jordan Gumberg. Stanford sophomore Isiah Salinda finished solo third with a final-round 70 for a 4-under total.
The Sierra Players is in its 2nd running created by Phillip Dawson Jr. who partnered with Alex Weber to run this year's event. With a field that represented a handful of D1 college programs, the Sierra is on its way to becoming one of Northern California's premiere amateur events.
