Cheng-Tsung Pan grabs Amer Ari lead with second-straight 65

WAIKOLOA, Hawaii — University of Washington senior Cheng-Tsung Pan finished his round at the Amer Ari Collegiate Invitational for the second straight day boasting no bogeys on his seven-under, 65 card. At 130, Pan leads the individual race by two shots over University of Southern California sophomore Rico Hoey while his Huskies own a three-shot advantage over Hoey's Trojans entering Saturday's final round at the Waikoloa Beach Kings Course. In 36 holes thus far, Pan has 10 birdies and two eagles — both on par-fives. Pan shared the first-round lead with Arizona State's Jon Rahm, though the recent PGA TOUR top-five finisher posted 72 on Friday to drop into a tie for 10th. The Huskies and Sun Devils were tied for second place after round one, trailing USC by a stroke, but thanks to 65s from Pan and 2014 Pacific Coast Amateur winner Corey Pereira, Washington will head to Saturday looking for a win at one of the most elite collegiate events. The lowest round of the day came from Auburn sophomore Matt Gilchrest, who shot 64 to help his Tigers grab third place by a stroke over Arizona State. Individually, Gilchrist sits in a tie for third place with Pereira, along with Brandon McIver of Oregon and 2013 U.S. Junior Amateur winner Scottie Scheffler of Texas.
