Cersosimo finishes off Firecracker Open victory

Jack Cersosimo birdied his final hole at the Firecracker Open, but he hardly needed to.

Jack Cersosimo birdied his final hole at the Firecracker Open, but he hardly needed to. Cersosimo already had the title all but wrapped up at Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin, Texas. The former Concordia-Texas player finished 54 holes with a 13-under total after firing three rounds in the 60s. He was one of only two men in the field to do that.

Cersosimo trailed Brian Noonan, the Austin-based mid-amateur whose resume includes victories at the 2013 Harvey Penick Invitational and 2014 Morris Williams Mid-Am, by two shots after Noonan opened the tournament with a 6-under 65 and Cersosimo had 67. But Cersosimo put himself in the driver’s seat after a second-round 65 of his own that included six birdies, an eagle and just two bogeys.

When he finished the week with a 68, he left himself four shots ahead of Steve Landry and Jay Reynolds, who tied for second at 9 under. Landry, with rounds of 68-67-69, also was under 70 all week.

Alex Ellis had a final-round 65 to climb to fourth after back-to-back rounds of 70. Dallas Hankamer and Seger Howell were another shot back in fifth.

Noonan fell to rounds of 71-71 to finish seventh.
